James S. Covey 2884 - Breed

Became involved in dogs in 1965 as kennel help for an Irish Setter kennel which competed in conformation and performance events.

Began showing dogs, primarily Sporting, in approximately 1970.

First approved to judge in 1980 and eventually approved to judge the Sporting Group and Best in Show. Also approved to judge Norwich and Norfolk Terriers.

National Specialties I have judged at least once are: Brittany, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, English Setters, Irish Setters, English Cocker Spaniels, Weimaraners and Norfolk Terriers. Other breeds I have judged large supported entries, some in conjunction with Nationals, are Pointers, German Shorthaired Pointers, Curly Coated Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Gordon Setters, English Springer Spaniels, Vizlas and Sussex Spaniels.

In the early 1970s I started a breeding program in English Cocker Spaniels which spanned approximately 25 years, producing a number of champions and a breeder handled National Specialty winner, a highlight of my life in dogs. In the early 1980s we started breeding Norfolk Terriers and remain very involved in the breed. I hold the position of Judges Education Chair, appointed by our National Board of Governors in 2015.

We lost our last Norfolk in 2021 and currently have one Veteran English Cocker Spaniel .
